There are 12 known species of lionfish at this time. All of the lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific region which is why they are also known as Indo-Pacific lionfish. Their scientific name is Pterois and even though some of them say firefish, turkeyfish and lionfish, they are all types of lionfish. They are:
- Pterois andover – Andover lionfish
- Pterois antennata -Spot-fin lionfish
- Pterois brevipectoralis – Ray-finned Lionfish
- Pterois cincta -Red Sea lionfish
- Pterois lunulata -Luna lionfish
- Pterois miles -Devil firefish
- Pterois mombasae –Frill-fin turkeyfish
- Pterois radiata -Clear-fin lionfish
- Pterois sphex -Hawaiian turkeyfish
- Pterois volitans -Red lionfish
